Last Logbook Entry  for previous day

3/31 - 4/3:  The shortest long distance fishing trip I've ever taken.

Two Full Days at Punta Pescadero Mexico (and that's all)

So why would that be the case?  As it turns out, for several reasons.

Right now the flight cost is only about $600 - 750 to fly round trip into SJD from Tucson - that's the airport code for San Jose Del Cabo down at the lower end of the Sea of Cortez.  But to get the extra 90 kilometers to the resort by taxi now runs about $450 round trip.  The road North towards Los Barriles is Highway 1 and that takes about an hour of smooth driving.

Los Barriles is where the easy driving ends and the bad stuff begins - in earnest.  That last leg of the trip is on one of the worst dirt roads I've ever seen.  Those extra few miles (at five miles per hour) are really ugly.

So while we've been to this place many times in the past, the last part of the trip alone is enough to give me pause about ever doing it again.

This resort really doesn't cater basically to Americanos - it seems to be mostly Mexican nationals who visit here - either by braving the drive with a rental or personal car - or by use of a taxi as I did.  When we get to the resort, few people on the staff bother trying English for conversation.  So even checking in can be a kind of confusing chore.

At check in the nice lady had to read me some kind of translation of a new type of charge by the government that I did not understand and really did not like.  Although it turned out to be minimal, it suggested that perhaps Scheinbaum is getting even with Trump and his nutty tariffs.  That too is something of a deal breaker for me.  The balance of the check in was done by typing a question in English and/or Spanish on her phone.

Unhappily the resort has also made a number of culinary changes including raising the charges for them.  The place has never had an all inclusive option which frankly we generally look for when choosing a nice destination resort.

What used to be an eclectic and reasonably priced menu for each meal has now become noticeably more expensive and frankly of edgier quality.

One last complaint.  The rooms along the top of the cliff are nicely laid out and very clean.  But there was neither a single water bottle, nor any decent drinking glasses or bottle opener or utensils in the place.  The safe didn't work and the TV remote was low on battery juice.

Here's a few short video clips of what used to be kind of a fun place to spend some time in the sun.

The Fishing

Working the shoreline north or south of the resort was always interesting even if not always really productive.  The types of fish here are completely different from what we find in Belize or on the gulf side coast of Mexico.  Instead of primarily bonefish, tarpon, and permit, we find roosterfish, pargo, hawkfish, trumpet fish, sierra, jacks, etc.

However, those predator species do not come close to the shoreline unless water temperatures are on the warmer side, which they were not on this trip.  So guess what.  Despite global warming (?) it was too early in the season for those bad boys to be chasing bait fish on to the beaches. Thus the fishing more or less sucked too.  A few good moments show up in the following short video.

And with too many negative things going on after the first day of a paid for six night trip, I bought another earlier plane ticket home and left after only two full days of stay at this (soon to be just a fond memory of a place never to be visited again).
